Storyteller

A conflict resolution system presented by White Wolf. In the Storyteller System (as opposed to in the newer Storytelling system, also released by White Wolf for their "New WoD" systems), stats are generally rated between 0 and 5 for human range (superhuman can reach 6-10); Five being amazing, Four being outstanding, Three being good, Two being standard for the field, One being lacking in the field, and Zero being abysmal. When one wishes to attempt a task, one adds two appropriate stats (generally Attribute + Ability) and rolls a die pool comprised of that many 10-sided dice. A difficulty is assigned for the task, with the low range tending to be around 3 for the easiest tasks and the high range tending to be 9 or 10. Each die that is equal to or higher than the assigned difficulty is a success. Each die that comes up as a '1' is a botch and is the opposite of a success.

Optional rules have been included for ease of play:

  • If the die pool is greater than the difficulty, the difference can be assumed as a "gimmie" degree of success.
  • A point of "Willpower" can be expended to assume a single degree of success instead of rolling.
  • Botches cannot reduce the sum total below 0 if any successes factored into the roll (found in Revised Storyteller).
  • If a calculated difficulty is over 9, a "threshold" can be applied where the excess of the calculated difficulty over 9 is counted as anti-successes (found in Mage Revised Storyteller).
